Umrah is a beautiful and spiritual journey that brings a believer closer to Allah. Though it is not obligatory like Hajj, performing Umrah carries great rewards and immense blessings. If you are planning your sacred journey, this step-by-step guide will help you understand how to perform Umrah properly.
1. Make the Intention (Niyyah)
Every act of worship begins with intention. Before crossing the Miqat (designated boundary), pilgrims must make the intention for Umrah purely for the sake of Allah. Men wear the two white Ihram sheets, while women wear modest Islamic dress. After wearing Ihram, recite the Talbiyah:
“Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik…”
This signifies that you are answering the call of Allah.
2. Enter Masjid al-Haram and Perform Tawaf
Upon reaching Makkah, enter Masjid al-Haram with humility and gratitude. When you first see the Holy Kaaba, make dua sincerely.
Tawaf is performed by circling the Kaaba seven times in an anti-clockwise direction. Each round begins from the Black Stone (Hajr al-Aswad). During Tawaf, you may recite duas, dhikr, or Quran. It is a moment of deep reflection and connection with Allah.
After completing seven rounds, offer two rak’ahs of prayer behind Maqam Ibrahim (if possible), then drink Zamzam water and make heartfelt dua.
3. Perform Sa’i Between Safa and Marwah
Sa’i commemorates the struggle of Hazrat Hajra (AS), who ran between the hills of Safa and Marwah in search of water for her son, Prophet Ismail (AS).
You will walk seven times between Safa and Marwah, starting at Safa and ending at Marwah. Men are encouraged to walk briskly between the green markers. Use this time for prayer and remembrance of Allah.
4. Halq or Taqsir (Cutting the Hair)
The final step of Umrah is cutting the hair. Men may either shave their head (Halq) or trim their hair (Taqsir), while women cut a small portion of their hair. After this, the state of Ihram ends, and your Umrah is complete.
Important Tips for Pilgrims
- Stay patient and calm in crowds.
- Keep yourself hydrated and rested.
- Focus on worship rather than worldly distractions.
- Follow guidance from your group leader or scholar.
Conclusion
Umrah is not just a physical journey but a spiritual transformation. It is a time to seek forgiveness, make sincere dua, and strengthen your faith. With proper preparation and understanding of the rituals, your Umrah can become one of the most meaningful experiences of your life.
May Allah accept your Umrah and grant you a blessed and peaceful journey. Ameen.
